Small Group Leaders play a vital role in accomplishing the\u00a0mission\u00a0and\u00a0vision\u00a0of your church. They help create and develop environments in which members can connect with God and each other for the purpose of discipleship. They present an example and model of what being a disciple of Jesus looks like\u00a0in action. Because of the influence they have, there are a few crucial qualities that they need to be walking out in their life. Small Group leaders do\u00a0not have to perfect<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 God uses imperfect people because that is all he has to work with!<\/span><\/p>\n

When we first started\u00a0Real Life Ministries\u00a0our need for small groups grew at a faster rate than we were able to raise up leaders.\u00a0 Because of this, we had to place people in leadership positions before they were completely confident in leading. God blessed us and brought growth even in our deficiencies, as he always does. Going through this forced us to quickly put some criteria together for\u00a0identifying and raising up<\/i>\u00a0small group leaders. We found that as we looked at the members that had been able to go on to lead and facilitate groups effectively, there were a few\u00a0qualities\u00a0that they had all started with.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus\u00a0is the ultimate model of spiritual maturity we are all aiming for, so who better to look to as an example for the qualities we hope to see in our\u00a0leaders? Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1\u00a0\u201cFollow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

With that in mind, here are\u00a04 qualities<\/i>\u00a0we look for at\u00a0Real Life Ministries\u00a0when setting a Small Group leader in place.<\/span><\/p>\n

(I should add that this is by no means an exhaustive list, and it is assumed there are other criteria your church would have in place before a member is considered to serve in this manner.)<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Servant Heart<\/span><\/h2>\n

The person with the heart of a servant will be\u00a0humble\u00a0and\u00a0teachable. They will genuinely care about others, and be willing to give of themselves to serve them.<\/span><\/p>\n

1 Peter 5:2\u00a0Be shepherds of God\u2019s flock\u00a0that is under your care, watching over them\u2014not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;\u00a0not pursuing dishonest gain,\u00a0but eager to serve;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

John 13:14-15\u00a0Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another\u2019s feet.\u00a0I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Maturing Spiritually<\/span><\/h2>\n

The person who is selected to lead a Small Group should be\u00a0actively<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0consistently<\/i>maturing spiritually. This means they will have a daily relationship with the Lord and be learning His Word.\u00a0 They are being obedient to God and\u00a0yielding\u00a0to His will. They should be serving\u00a0Jesus<\/i>\u00a0by serving\u00a0others<\/i>, and actively showing the fruit of the Spirit in\u00a0all\u00a0of their relationships. This is an\u00a0outward sign of inward maturity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ephesians 4:2-3\u00a0Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another\u00a0in love.\u00a0<\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/i><\/span>Make every effort to keep the unity\u00a0of the Spirit through the bond of peace.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Facilitation Skill Sets<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are some skills that are very helpful in leading a group. Good facilitation skills don\u2019t generally come naturally, but they can certainly be\u00a0learned.\u00a0This is why at Real Life we ask that every Small Group leader raise up an\u00a0apprentice<\/i>. The apprentice has the opportunity to watch the leader and learn some of these skills from the example they set.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is important that a leader paves the way to openness by being\u00a0transparent\u00a0with their own struggles. He must create an atmosphere that feels\u00a0safe<\/i>\u00a0and encourages members to share honestly. He must be able to\u00a0draw out<\/i>\u00a0the quiet members, and pull back the ones that over-talk. He should be willing to\u00a0listen<\/i>\u00a0more than he\u00a0speaks<\/i>, and be more concerned with asking\u00a0questions\u00a0than with giving\u00a0answers. All of these things help create an environment where relationships can\u00a0grow deeper<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proverbs 20:5\u00a0The purposes of a person\u2019s heart are deep waters,\u00a0but one who has insight draws them out.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

James 1:19\u00a0My dear brothers and sisters,\u00a0take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak\u00a0and slow to become angry,<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Commitment<\/span><\/h2>\n

The person you choose to lead a Small Group should be\u00a0committed, not only to God, but to your church body. Two of the things we look at to measure the commitment of our members are their\u00a0attendance<\/i>\u00a0and their\u00a0giving<\/i>. These are certainly not the only signs of a committed heart, but they are necessary signs all the same. The person who is committed to tithing is not only obeying God\u2019s command, they are also personally investing in the body they are a part of. This indicates\u00a0submission to the leadership<\/i>\u00a0of their church, and also brings about a personal\u00a0ownership<\/i>\u00a0in the work being done there. In the same way, the person who is committed to attend the services, events, and trainings of the church body is\u00a0aligning\u00a0himself under the leadership. He is setting an example by his actions of the priorities he holds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hebrews 10:24-25\u00a0And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,\u00a0not giving up meeting together,\u00a0as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another\u2014and all the more as you see the Day approaching.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

1 John 1:3\u00a0They devoted themselves to the apostles\u2019 teaching\u00a0and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread\u00a0and to prayer.<\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I will end with this quote from A.W. Tozer:<\/span><\/p>\n

“I believe it might be accepted as a fairly reliable rule of thumb that the man who is ambitious to lead is disqualified as a leader. The true leader will have no desire to lord it over God\u2019s heritage, but will be humble, gentle, self-sacrificing and altogether as ready to follow as to lead, when the Spirit makes it clear that a wiser and more gifted man than himself has appeared.”<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n
