{"id":152195,"date":"2025-10-23T12:09:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T17:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discipleship.org\/?p=152195"},"modified":"2025-10-23T12:09:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T17:09:24","slug":"the-perfect-method-how-jesus-made-disciples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discipleship.org\/uncategorized\/the-perfect-method-how-jesus-made-disciples\/","title":{"rendered":"The Perfect Method: How Jesus Made Disciples"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dear Discipleship-first Friends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Christians rightly focus on Jesus\u2019 message\u2014but often overlook His method. Yet the way Jesus made disciples reveals divine wisdom for transforming lives today. His approach wasn\u2019t just effective for the first century\u2014it remains the perfect model for every generation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus\u2019 method of disciple making remains the perfect model for transforming lives through love, relationships, and intentionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Forgotten Half of the Gospels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christians have long studied what Jesus <em>said<\/em>, but not enough have studied what Jesus <em>did<\/em>. The way He made disciples embodied love, wisdom, intentionality, and deep understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture affirms that \u201c<strong>all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge dwell in Christ<\/strong>\u201d (Colossians 2:3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, Jesus adapted to His culture and used familiar teaching methods. But His approach went far beyond the rabbis of the day\u2014it reflected the heart and mind of God Himself. The principles He modeled are <strong>transcultural<\/strong>: they have been found to work among all peoples, in every place, at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus, the perfect human being, demonstrated the perfect way to form disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we truly want to understand Jesus\u2019 mission, we must study not only His message\u2014but His method.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help us grasp the significance of His approach, here are <strong>six reasons Jesus\u2019 method remains the best model for disciple making today.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jesus\u2019 Method Makes Love Central<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During seminary, I conducted a study to identify the top themes emphasized in the New Testament. One virtue stood above all others: <strong>agape love.<\/strong> Paul wrote that love surpasses spiritual gifts, knowledge, and even sacrificial service (1 Corinthians 13:1\u20133). Without love, \u201cI gain nothing.\u201d Faith, hope, and love endure, \u201cbut the greatest of these is love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus also said, <em>\u201cBy this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another\u201d<\/em> (John 13:35).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet most churches today are not designed to cultivate love. Large gatherings and packed schedules often leave little room for deep, relational investment. Many Christians are so busy focused on preaching, praise &amp; worship, and programs that they struggle to simply find time to <em>love people well.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, Jesus\u2019 model makes love the foundation of discipleship. When we follow His example, love becomes <strong>both the environment and the outcome<\/strong> of spiritual growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jesus\u2019 Method Reaches Both the Lost and the Saved<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus discipled people <em>before<\/em> and <em>after<\/em> they came to faith. His intentional and relational approach was consistent throughout their journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In truth, according to Matthew 28, evangelism and discipleship aren\u2019t two separate this\u2014they\u2019re the front end and back end of one continuous process. Jesus\u2019 Great Commission captures this beautifully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGo and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.\u201d\u2014 <em>Matthew 28:19\u201320<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first step\u2014leading people to faith and baptism\u2014introduces them to Jesus. The second\u2014teaching them to obey\u2014helps them mature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evangelism, then, is <strong>pre-conversion discipleship.<\/strong> As my friend Alex Absalom puts it, <em>\u201cDiscipleship begins at hello.\u201d <\/em>And it ends with<em> \u201cGo and make disciples of others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople far from God can begin learning from Jesus before they ever believe in Him.\u201d Whether reaching unbelievers or maturing believers, Jesus\u2019 method proves effective for both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jesus\u2019 Method Produces Real Transformation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Christians today live much like non-Christians. Sermons inspire, but often don\u2019t transform. Programs inform, but seldom shape hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, social media, work environments, school, and entertainment disciple people daily\u2014shaping values, priorities, and desires. The church now faces a <strong>discipleship crisis<\/strong>, where digital culture often forms believers more than their faith communities do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus\u2019 method offers the solution. His approach was <em>life-on-life<\/em>: eating, walking, talking, and serving with His disciples. Through close, intentional relationships, He modeled what obedience looked like in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We follow Jesus\u2019 method today when we enter into people lives to intentional help them trust and follow Jesus \u2026 as we invite them into our homes, meet them at coffee shops, join them at church assemblies, text them, call them, and hang out with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus showed that <strong>disciples aren\u2019t mass-produced\u2014they\u2019re hand-crafted, one at a time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jesus\u2019 Method Unites Churches and Leaders<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a world of division and ideological diversity, unity within the church can feel elusive. Yet Jesus\u2019 method gives church leaders and churches in different faith traditions a shared anchor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert Coleman\u2019s classic <em>The Master Plan of Evangelism<\/em> (1963) persuaded generations of Christian leaders that Jesus\u2019 way is the best way. For over 55 years, Coleman taught this model in leading seminaries around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Older leaders appreciate it for its biblical foundation; younger leaders love it for its relational authenticity. Across generations and denominations, Jesus\u2019 method builds unity around a common mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Younger leaders are particularly drawn to Jesus method today. The love the emphasis on relationships, authenticity, transparency, and intentionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe closer we align with Jesus\u2019 method, the more united we become around His mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jesus Commanded Us to Make Disciples\u2014Using His Method<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus didn\u2019t merely command disciple making; He <em>modeled<\/em> it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He showed His followers how to raise up intentional, relational leaders (Luke 10:1\u201312). He emphasized the supremacy of love (John 13:34\u201335) and then commissioned His disciples to reproduce what He had done with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone, when he is fully trained, will be like his teacher.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Luke 6:40<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apostle Paul modeled and taught the same method (2 Timothy 3:10-14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Great Commission assumes that we will disciple others as Jesus discipled us. His command includes His method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jesus\u2019 Method Works\u2014Then and Now<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the beginning, Jesus invested deeply in a few. He called His first disciples early (Matthew 4:18\u201322; Luke 6:13) and spent most of His time with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scholar Bill Hull estimates that Jesus spent <strong>up to 90%<\/strong> of His ministry with the Twelve. They traveled, ate, worked, suffered, and learned together. Through that investment, Jesus shaped the men who would carry His mission to the ends of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul continued the same model\u2014discipling Timothy, Silas, and others. He wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>2 Timothy 2:2<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Jesus to Paul to today, <strong>the intentional, relational way of disciple making remains effective because it reflects God\u2019s design for growth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion: Returning to the Ways of Jesus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Programs can fill rooms, but only Jesus\u2019 method fills hearts. His life-on-life approach\u2014rooted in love, relationship, and obedience\u2014remains God\u2019s plan for transforming the world one person at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the church truly wants renewal, we must return to the way of the Master. Jesus\u2019 method isn\u2019t outdated\u2014it\u2019s <em>divinely timeless.<\/em> When we follow it, we don\u2019t just make converts; we make people who look like Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The message of Jesus cannot be separated from the method of Jesus.<\/strong><br>His way is not just <em>a<\/em> way\u2014it\u2019s <em>the<\/em> way to make disciples who transform the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recommended Reading<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The Master Plan of Evangelism<\/em> \u2014 Robert E.
